🤝 Spazii is a social enterprise bringing community together — one space at a time.

✨ Behind The Door – Sarah Matthews

Sarah Matthews, is the passionate CEO of the Little BIG Foundation. With a strong belief in the power of community and human connection, Sarah has dedicated her career to tackling loneliness and helping people feel a greater sense of belonging.

Since founding the Little BIG Foundation, Sarah has led a movement that transforms simple social moments into meaningful change. Her leadership style is grounded in empathy, collaboration, and trust — empowering local people to take the lead in creating spaces where kindness and connection thrive.

Under her guidance, the Little BIG House in Summer Hill has become a vibrant community hub that welcomes hundreds of locals every month.

Here’s what Sarah shared with us:

💫 What impact has Little BIG made so far?

“In just four years, we’ve gathered over 50 volunteers and hosts who run 90+ events monthly at our Little BIG House in Summer Hill. We’ve seen a 7% drop in loneliness, 17% more social contact, and an 18% rise in neighbours knowing each other. Even better, 73% of attendees meet someone new!”

🤝 How does Little BIG bring people together?

“We create spaces where neighbours naturally connect — from parents’ groups to beer tastings and workplace “Good Work” activations. Our secret is volunteers: locals who host events, share skills, and welcome others. By supporting them with training and confidence-building, we help build lasting habits of kindness and connection — the true foundation of togetherness.”

💭 Which personal belief shapes your leadership most?

“I believe in getting out of the way of good people. Local people have incredible ideas that bring others together and deliver real social impact. By letting them lead — and focusing on the conditions that help them succeed, like a beautiful low-cost venue, confidence-building, and structural support — we can achieve so much more together.”

🚀 What excites you about Little BIG’s future?

“I’m excited for the day when having a Little BIG House in every new development becomes the norm, where no significant development takes place without considering the social well-being of both existing residents and newcomers.”

“I’m also inspired by how we’re linking our impact goals with property sector outcomes, creating a more sustainable model than relying solely on grants or donations. It’s an approach increasingly embraced across the not-for-profit and social enterprise sectors.”

💖 A story that captures why you do this work?

“I was honoured to speak at the Parliamentary Inquiry into Loneliness, where Little BIG was featured as a case study of success at the NSW Government level. But our biggest impact is local — like a volunteer who said they now feel confident to reach out and invite another parent to join their group. That’s the heart of Little BIG — empowering kindness and connection in everyday life.”

✨ Behind The Door – Andrea Comastri

Andrea is Co-founder and CEO of  Hotel Etico, the first award-winning not for profit social enterprise hotel in Australia, employing and training young people with disability, challenging the wider community to see both the human and economic value of an inclusive society and partnering with the Australian tourism and hospitality industry to make it the most inclusive in the world.

A strong believer in the transformative power of social enterprises to create sustainable impact, Andrea is an expert changemaker with over 25 years’ experience in the not-for-profit sector.

He held executive, director, and advisory roles in charities and philanthropy in areas including disability, youth unemployment, homelessness, domestic violence, addiction, aged care, and education.

Andrea is an Honorary Industry Fellow at the UTS Business School, a 2022 AMP Tomorrow Maker, and a 2024 WestpacScholar Social Change Fellow.

In this heartfelt interview, Andrea shares his inspiring journey in his own words:

💡 What sparked Hotel Etico?

“I’ve always worked in the not-for-profit sector and been motivated by social justice. When I was approached by the founders of Hotel Etico in Italy, I knew the model would work here. Together with Alex Toselli and Tracylee Arestides, we built Hotel Etico as Australia’s first not-for-profit social enterprise hotel.”

❤️ What drives your mission?

“It comes down to fairness, dignity, and belief in potential. Meaningful employment provides financial independence, restores confidence, and shifts how people see themselves. Too many talented individuals are left out because society underestimates them. I’m driven to challenge that.”

🌱 A transformation story

“One notable one is our graduate Quinn, a young autistic man who joined us at 19 with little experience. After graduating, he became an apprentice Chef at the prestigious Fairmont Resort. His potential was always there; it just needed to be discovered and nurtured.”

💬 Misconceptions you’re breaking

“People often focus on limitations or fear of doing the wrong thing. At Hotel Etico, we show that with the right environment, everyone can be productive and live with dignity. Employers should look beyond productivity and see the holistic value — inclusive workplaces are better for staff, culture, and customers.”

🌍Advice for purpose-led founders

“Embrace diversity — it brings immense value. See the dedication people with disability bring. Ask for help, don’t be afraid, and talk to others who’ve done it. You’ll discover the powerful world of inclusive hospitality.”

At Spazii, we celebrate changemakers like Andrea who lead with compassion, purpose, and vision — reminding us that inclusion is not just possible, but powerful.
